Michael, Canada (Linköping Universitet - EHESS –
2006-2008)
Present position:
PhD Candidate in Public Health at Universite de Montreal, Canada
"My general experience was very positive
and stimulating because of the diverse group of students from different
background and culture. It is very interesting to feel this way in a
small programme rich in high academic standards and cultural diversity.
Also, certain moments in the course of the programme thought me how
to appreciate the essence of human existence as evidenced in the loss
of a colleague in 2008. This particular event has led me to venture
into an area of research I had always thought I was never going to do.
In the same vein, the ability and opportunity to interact with EU officials
and students in other programmes through the Erasmus Mundus student
association were also remarkable moments I will forever cherish. Above
all, being able to mix with local students from Evora, Linkoping, Paris
and Barcelona made the programme and experience worthwhile. There is
no doubt that addressing many of the health problems facing not only
advanced industrialized nations and developing nations in the world
require more than just one approach. The evidence from many reviews
has shown that public health problems in the new century require a multi-sectoral
and multi-disciplinary approach to tackle and reflect on them. To this,
I think the PhoenixEM programme has been able to do this from the participating
institutions and the country specific historical perspectives which
I also hope can be applied to other countries. This particular point
was useful for my comprehensive exam here in Canada. I must admit that
my experience in the programme opened up a new chapter in my life and
interest in health research both in low-and-middle income countries
as well as in advanced industrialized countries such as France and Sweden.
It has had tremendously impact in my understanding of not only the organization
of health care in developed countries and also given me a tool to compare
the good, the bad and ugly in these countries. Above all, my experience
in Europe has helped a lot in my doctoral programme here in Canada.
First of all, all the knowledge gained during the masters was useful
during my seminar and secondly, it made my comprehensive exam (written/oral)
a lot easier as I was able to use the wealth of knowledge gathered during
the exam. The approaches from the two universities I attended as well
as the seminar weeks in the other participating institutions have been
very useful."

"The experience in the international students
group is fantastic. Not only about the cultural perspectives, but also
about the “thinking". This kind of education should be encouraged
and promoted to a larger extent. In my current job, the training at
LiU and EHESS facilitate much my work. Without Phoenix EM experiences,
it could not possible to get my current job at prestige university in
China and in the world".

"The courses covered a very broad range of topics regarding public
health, it also gives us a picture about the health policies with a
global perspective, not only European view. I got interested in many
health areas, including healthcare policy, economic health, health service
and management. I think the master will help me in my PhD study if I
want to pursue it in the near future. Because we were trained in a very
strict way and we studied in different countries, so basically we gained
a wide range of knowledge and different academic methodologies. Research
capability was improved a lot after two years study".
